What is Mocha?

Mocha is a lighter-roasted coffee prepared using the beans of Arabia and Ethiopia.

Mochanut (or Mocca Nut) was an 18th century beverage invented by Alexander Pendergrass, who owned a coffeehouse in Philadelphia/New York. His barista added chocolate to the Mocha mixture, which resembled crème brulée or chocolate pudding.

Therefore, it was then known as “chocolate coffee.” Not very creative though! Later on after further research and development of taste buds, he found out that mixing milk with this concoction made it more interesting. He called it Mochaccino.

What is Mocha

The Mocha coffee became very popular among the 17th century patrons, a lot of whom were women! It was also renowned as “women’s coffee” because it gave them great energy while helping them to avoid the effects of PMS (PMS is what happens before menstruation).

Interesting fact: chocolate and mocha are both derived from cocoa seeds and produce similar flavor profiles. The difference lies in how they are processed. Mocha is left to dry on the tree whereas chocolate comes from fermented beans that have been dried, roasted, shelled, de-shelled, and ground into nibs. This processing makes Mocha a more robust tasting coffee.

What Chocolate Coffee became popular and was sold in grocery stores as well as 7-11’s. Most people were so consumed with the bitterness of beer that they didn’t know about this new drink called Mochaccino. In fact, it was only sold by using the mugs!

Difference between Mocha and Cappuccino

Mocha is made up of espresso, hot chocolate and steamed milk. Whereas  Cappuccino is made up of one third espresso, one third frothed milk and a dash of cocoa powder or chocolate syrup over it! The preparation time for Mocha varies from café to café but can take more than 15 minutes depending on the quality they serve and other factors.

Cappuccino is a variant of espresso . Cappuccino is made with less water than an ordinary espresso , at about 18 to 20 grams. This produces a drink topped by a layer of dense foam. Cappuccino is prepared in less than 5 minutes by just adding hot water to the coffee powder.

What if I want to have Cappuccino?

Mocha and Cappuccino are two different kinds of hot drinks. As per my point of view, Mochaccino is perfect for those days where you don’t have enough time in your hands but still would like to enjoy a mouth-watering cup of coffee with chocolatey syrup in it.

Whereas the cappuccino is best when served after meals as its taste complements well with savory dishes because of its strong flavor! So next time you are out having dinner ask for a small cup of cappuccino at the end ?

You can also get creative with it by adding some mint leaves that will make it more refreshing and take care about the calories by leaving out the sugar syrup.

Mocha is actually derived from a famous drink called “Kopi Luwak” which comes directly from Indonesia and it is made of ground coffee beans that are digested, then excreted by Asian palm civet (luwaks),and then it is brewed as any other coffee.

The taste varies depending on how much the animal has eaten and its diet. It usually tastes acidic or sour because of the luwak’s main diet, which can include coffee berries; however, there are some farmers who feed their civets with oranges to make the mocha taste more palatable.

How do I know if my Mochaccino is good?

To know whether your cup of coffee is good or not, you need to taste it. So that’s what you do. You take a small sip of the Mocha and if it leaves an unpleasant burnt taste in your mouth, then its time to ask for another one!

If he/she serves you with the same cup than they are probably doing something wrong like over heating the beans or using poor quality ingredients like palm oil instead of coconut oil (that definitely tastes bitter). Bad baristas always use low grade products so make sure they don’t ruin your day by serving you bad mocha ?
